AICUF Seniors coming together... 

AICUF, All India Catholic University Federation, സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ട് ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ട് തികയുന്നതിന്റെ ആഘോഷമാണ്, മറ്റു പല പരിപാടികൾക്കും പുറമെ  അതിന്റെ പൂർവ്വ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളിലൂടെ  ഇപ്പോൾ ഇവിടെ ദിവ്യബലി അർപ്പിച്ച് അരങ്ങേറുന്നത്.

ആദ്യമേതന്നെ, എന്തുകൊണ്ട് ഇതിനെ ക്രൈസ്തവ സർവ്വകലാശാല വിദ്യാർത്ഥി ഫെഡറഷൻ എന്ന് വിളിച്ചില്ല, അതുമല്ലെങ്കിൽ, ഈശോ സഭ വൈദീകൻ തുടങ്ങിയിട്ടും ഇതിനെ ജീസസ് യൂത്ത് പോലെ  യേശു നാമത്തിൽ ഒരു പേരിട്ടില്ല... 

ക്രൈസ്തവ സാക്ഷ്യം വ്യക്തിപരമായിരിക്കെ,

എന്തുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു സംഘടനയുടെ ആവശ്യകത? 

കൂടാതെ, ഇന്ന് വിഭാഗിയതയും സ്പർദ്ധയും അക്രമവും മതങ്ങളുടെ പേരിലും നടക്കുമ്പോൾ, 

 ഇത് മറ്റു മതസ്ഥരെ, മറ്റു ക്രൈസ്തവരെ അന്യം നിർത്തില്ലേ, ഒഴിവാക്കുകയില്ലേ? 

ഒരു ഈശോ സഭാ അംഗവും നരവംശ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനുമായിരുന്ന തെയ്യാർഡ് ഷർദാൻ പ്രഭഞ്ച ക്രിസ്തു വിനെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോൾ... ഇന്നിപ്പോൾ റെയ്‌മുണ്ടോ പണിക്കർ പോലുള്ള ചിന്തകന്മാർ 'Anonymous Christians'- നെ വരെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോൾ ആക്രൈസ്തവ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെയും ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാരവാഹിത്വം ഒഴികെ അംഗത്വം നൽകുന്നു എന്നറിയുന്നതിൽ സന്തോഷം.

ഇതേ ഉദ്ദേശത്തോടെയാണ് ISI പോലുള്ള സമൂഹത്തെ വിശകലനം ചെയ്യാനും അങ്ങനെ സമൂഹത്തിലെ അതസ്തിതരെ കണ്ടെത്തി അവരുടെ പ്രവർത്തിക്കാൻ താല്പര്യമുള്ള സുമനസ്സുകളെ ഒരുക്കാനുമാണ് (Fr. Stan Lourdesamy) in the eighties...

'Option for the poor'

സ്ഥാപക ലക്ഷ്യം: അരികുവത്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടവരെ അറിയുന്നതിനും,  അവരുടെ അടിസ്ഥാന ആവശ്യങ്ങൾക്കുവേണ്ടി

അംഗങ്ങൾ ശാരീരിക, മാനസീക, ആത്യാത്മിക തലങ്ങളിലൂടെ സ്വയം സമർപ്പിക്കാൻ, സജ്ജരാക്കുന്നതിനും സമാനചിന്തയും പ്രവർത്തന രീതികളുമുള്ള മറ്റ് പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളോടും വ്യക്തികളോടും കൈകോർത്തും സഹകരിച്ചും അവരുടെ ഉയർച്ചയ്ക്കും ഉന്നമനത്തിനും വേണ്ടി പ്രവർത്തിക്കാനുമാണ്...

ഇതായിരുന്നില്ലേ യേശുവിന്റെയും ദൗത്യം: 'ദരിദ്രരെ സുവിശേഷം അറിയിക്കാൻ... ബന്ധിതർക്ക് മോചനവും അന്ധർക്ക് കാഴ്ചയും അടിച്ചമർത്തപ്പെട്ടവർക്ക് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യവും കർത്താവിന്റെ സ്വീകാര്യമായ വത്സരവും പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കാൻ...' Lk 4:18ff

ഇതിനാണ് പഴയ നിയമത്തിലെ പുറപ്പാട് പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ദൈവം ഇറങ്ങിവന്നത്: '... എന്റെ ജനത്തിന്റെ ക്ലേശങ്ങൾ ഞാൻ കണ്ടു... ക്രൂരത ഞാൻ കേട്ടു. യാതനകൾ ഞാൻ അറിയുന്നു... അവരെ മോചിപ്പിക്കാനും ക്ഷേമകരവും വിസ്തൃതവും, തേനും പാലും ഒഴുകുന്ന... സ്ഥലത്തേക്ക് അവരെ നയിക്കാനുമാണ്. Ex 3:7-8.

ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ നിറവിൽ നിൽക്കുമ്പോൾ നമ്മൾ ഇടപെട്ട സമൂഹങ്ങളിലെ അരികുവത്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടവരെ വിമോചിപ്പിക്കുവാൻ, 

ഉയർത്തുവാൻ AICUF - ന് എന്തു മാത്രം സാധിച്ചു എന്ന് വിലയിരുത്ത പ്പെടേണ്ടേ?

അതിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ, പ്രത്യാശ പൂർണമായ ഒരു ഭാവി നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹങ്ങൾക്ക്, വിശേഷിച്ചും അരികുവത്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടവർക്ക് ഉറപ്പു വരുത്തേണ്ടേ? 

ഇതിലെ കാലത്തിന്റെ വെല്ലുവിളി, ക്രൈസ്തവ ശിഷ്യത്വത്തിന്റെ വെല്ലുവിളി... “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” Lk 4:18-19

സിനഗോഗിലെ ആളുകൾ കേൾക്കെ ഇത് നിറവേറിയെന്നാണ് യേശു പ്രാഘോഷിച്ചത്, ജനം അത് അംഗീകരിച്ചത്. 

ഇത് ഓരോ യേശു ശിഷ്യന്റെയും വിശേഷിച്ച് AICUF അംഗങ്ങളുടെ നിയോഗമാണ്, ദൗത്യമാണ്, ഇന്നിന്റെ യുവതലമുറയുടെ, കലാലയ യുവതയുടെ കാര്യത്തിൽ പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും.

അധികാരം സ്ഥാനമാനങ്ങൾ, സമ്പത്ത്‌, ആഡംബരങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയോടുമുള്ള അവരുടെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തി ന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ...

എങ്കിലും അവരിലെ നന്മ, നീതിബോധം, സത്യസന്ധത എന്നിവയോടുള്ള വിട്ടുവീഴ്ചയില്ലാത്ത സമർപ്പണത്തിന്റെ മനസ്സ് കൈമുതലാക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് അവരെ അണിചേർത്ത് നീതിയുക്തമായ പ്രതീക്ഷയുടെ ഒരു ലോകം വാർത്തെടുക്കാൻ നമുക്ക് മാതൃകകളാവാം. അത് മാത്രമാവട്ടെ അവർക്കായി നമുക്ക് നൽകാനുള്ളത്.

യേശുവിന്റെ അവസാന വിധിയുടെ ( Mt 25: 40, 45) മാനദണ്ഡം ഇതുതന്നെ. അവിടെ അവരുമായി അവിടുന്ന് താരധമ്യപ്പെടുകയാണ്, ഐക്യദാർഢ്യം പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുകയാണ്, സാവൂളിന്റെ മാനസാന്തര സന്ദർഭത്തിലും (Acts 9:4-5). ഇതല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നുമല്ല, ഒരു ആചാരമോ അനുഷ്ടാനമോ അല്ല, അതെത്ര പവിത്രമായാലും... 

സാബത്ത് മനുഷ്യന് വേണ്ടിയാണ് അല്ലാതെ മനുഷ്യൻ സാമ്പത്തിന് വേണ്ടിയല്ല...

നിത്യ ജീവൻ അവകാശമാക്കാൻ ദൈവത്തെ സ്നേഹിക്കണം എന്നതിൽ സംശയമില്ലാത്തവർ, അയൽക്കാരനെ സ്നേഹിക്കണമെന്നും അറിയുന്നവരാണ്. എന്നാൽ അയൽക്കാരൻ ആരാണെന്ന് നിശ്ചയമില്ലാത്തവർ! അത് പഠിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ് നല്ല സമാരിയാക്കാരന്റെ Lk 10:25-37 ഉപമയിലൂടെ.

ആദിമ ക്രൈസ്തവർക്ക് ആ പേര് ലഭിച്ചതുതന്നെ അവരുടെ സമത്വ, സാഹോദര്യ ജീവിതം കണ്ടിട്ടാണ് (Acts 2:44-46/ 4:34-35).

യേശുതന്നെയും തിരിച്ചറിയപ്പെട്ടത് പങ്കു വയ്ക്കാനായി അപ്പം മുറിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് Lk 24:13ff

Second child of Mr. Arulappan Bhagavathar (son of late Mr. Vasthian Pillai of Kodimunai and late Mrs. Anthiniapillai) and Mrs. Lenamma (daughter of late Mr. Georis Pillai of Poonthura and late Mrs. Virisithaal of Kollemcode, Pozhiyoor) as the eldest child had an infant death some seven years back. In the meantime, my parents adapted one of the daughters of my eldest maternal aunt from Pozhiyoor and she was given in marriage. I was born in the State of Travancore and Trivandrum Diocese.

Have a brother and a sister with a daughter and son for the former and three daughters and a son for the later.

I was baptized on 1st February 1955.

My school in 1960 was Govt. UPS at Poothurai and the medium switched to Tamil from Malayalam as this part of the princely state of Travancore was annexed to the state of Madras in 1956 when the states of the recently independent India were reorganized on language basis.

My first Communion was on 13.12.1965 and Confirmation was on 20.03.1966 by our first bishop Vincent V. Derera.

In 1968 for my High School went to Pius XI HS at Thoothoor, some three kilo metres away, walking, of course.

I passed SSLC (XI standard) of the Govt. of Madras in 1971 scoring 311 out of 600 with Reg. No.5292. [Here my date of birth is recorded as 10.05.1955. This is in spite of my ‘jathakam’ immediately after my birth! Those days, the head masters took every parent to be illiterate and gave a convenient date, mostly in the months of April, May and June!]

Not being exposed to the world and was influenced by an aunt next to our house, opted for priesthood having no clear idea of what it is. Thus I joined St. Vincent’s Seminary, Mede’s Lane, Palayam after being chosen by Bishop Peter Bernard Pereira on 31.05.1971. Msgr. Gabriel D’Cruz was the rector, Fr. Martin Fernandez, the Procurator and Fr. Soosa Pakiam, the Prefect.

In 1972 joined St. Xavier’s College, Thumba in Kerala University for Pre Degree, staying at St. Andrew’s Parochial House with Fr. Ladislaus Mendez. I passed scoring 545 out of 1000 with Reg. No: 12229. At this time stayed at St. Andrews Parochial House.

Thereafter went to St. Joseph’s Pontifical Institute, Carmelgiri, Alwaye for Philosophy (B.Ph) in 1974 and Pontifical Institute of Theology and Philosophy, Mangalapuzha for Theology (B.D) in 1977. Our Rectors were Fr. Dominic Fernanedez, OCD (Navara Province, Spain), Msgr. Varghese Kavalakkatt (Ernakulam) and Fr. Geevarghese Panickar (Trivandrum Malankara Archdiocese) and bishops Soosa Pakiam, Thomas Chakkiath and Bosco Puthur were my professors.

§  Ordination by Bishop AB Jacob in my village, Erayumanthurai on 22.12.1980. “My foot stumbles Lord, but Thy mercy is my strength.’ Ps 94:18 [Homily by Fr. Soosa Pakiam, my prefect in the minor seminary and professor of Prophets and Wisdom literature at Mangalapuzha. Chasuble was from Carmel Convent and Alb of Rufus Pius Lean. My benefactress, Mummy Menting Polman and her son-in-law attended and were here for about a month.]

§  Two of my classmates, Sebastian Thekkethecheril of Vijayapuram and George Madathikandathil of Kothamangalam were ordained bishops.

Ministry:

24.12.1980:         - Assistant to Fr. Thomas Pereira at Anjengo and in charge of Thazhampally and Arayathuruthy.

16.02.1981:         - Appointed as Parish Priest at Poothura, St. Roch’s

- 02.05.1982 In the pretext of dispersing the aggressive Anjengo parishners, the Police opened fire at the victims, killing Gilbert, a defenceless young man with a family… It was followed by a ceremonial Inquiry Commission… [Thomas Kochery, CSsR, a former parish priest here came on my invitation and was arrested again with false charges for political reasons in the background of the on-going bye-election in Attingal… ]

25.07.1982:         - appointed parish priest of Keezharoor, St. Peter’s, presently in Neyyattinkara diocese, with Ankode, Edanji, Mannoor and Marayamuttom as sub-stations and almost all individual parishes now!

-          Built a Nursery School and cultivated the land.

-          People built a shrine… In order to pay for the expenses, had to dispose my motorcycle, Rajdoot, donated by my benefactress through the diocese.

-          Learned ‘Kalari’ from Selvaraj, the catechist at Marayamuttom and Thabala from Soman, Nellimood/

-          17.05.1983: – Elected to the Senate of Priests

o   Member of Senate Committee on ‘Social Action, Family and Lay Apostolate.’

-          Editorial Board member of ORA (Organ for Radical Action), a monthly in Malayalam.

-           06.09.1983: – in-charge of Paliode (Kottackal), St. Joseph’s in the absence of G. Christudas.

17.02.1985:         - appointed as the parish priest at Chinnathurai, St. Jude’s as it was requested by the ‘Island Priests’ with the hope of settling the strife between Thoothoor and Chinnathurai on the Pius XI HSS appointments…

                   - Left the parish as there was some misunderstanding and humiliating gesture from someone over the fight with Eraviputhenthurai over a foot ball tournament and following properties abductions…

15.07.1985:         - asked to be in charge of Vallavilai, St. Mary’s as Gerald Silva, the parish priest had to be absent due to a seeming court summons for witnessing in a murder case… In the meant time there was a fight between the Hindus/RSS in the neigbouring Kannanagam area and   people of Vallavila on some rumours, resulting in a brutal fight and police firing and someone from the other side found missing… I was implicated in that incident and had to go rather underground due to threat to my life and arrest…

08.08.1985: Parish Priest at Kochuthrua, St. Antony’s.

- Manager at St. Antony’s LP School there. Disqualified in a suit against appointing a rather junior teacher of our parish against another senior, but non-Catholic…

                   - Did my B.A in Philosophy as a private student in the University of Kerala

- My interview to Deshabhimani on ONV contesting Parliament election from Trivandrum was published in box new in the first page…

19.08.1990: Ashram life at Kurishumala, Wagamon with Francis Acharya, after frequenting fr. Mariadas at Thirumala, Chunkankadai, Nagercoil. Helped in teaching philosophy for the aspirants there and in preparing a calendar of saints, including the non-Christian ones…

None other than the bishop knew of this. Somehow, my parents came with my sister and child, Frs. Rajan, Xavier Alexander, Sr. Luchella Xavier and Gladin etc. and with the permission of the acharya at the Caritas Hospital, Ettumanoor, came home.

While meeting the bishop, he asked my help to open the closed church and presbytery at Thoothoor, after the failed few attempts, which I obliged. Somehow, I could succeed and so I was asked to be in charge from 15.01.1991.

15.01.1991: Parish Priest at Thoothoor, St. Thomas’ Forane Church.

             Stopped receiving Mass stipend as well as allowance since January 1992

02.02.1993: Manager/Correspondent at Pius XI HSS, where I did my high school, after almost ten years of receivership.

- 25.09.1993: Priest in charge at Eraviputhenthurai, St. Catherine’s after Fr. Maria Dominic had to leave the parish.

05.02.1994: Fight between Chinnathurai and Thoothoor on appointments at the school. Six people of the former parish were killed, followed by arrests and exile…

                   - Kept away for some two months, in spite of the appointment at Ammanimala.

10.04.1994: Parish Priest at Ammanimala, Christ the King’s and Thumbottukonam, St. Joseph’s

- After some three months left the parish for PG at DVK, Bangalore, though not sent by the diocese.

04.07.1994: PG in Biblical Theology at Dharmaram Vidya Kshethra, Bangalore. Reg. No: 94501

01.12.2002: opted for Nuh Mission in Haryana in the Archdiocese of Delhi to save Churchil, a new priest, IVD from our village and to facilitate a parish for Santhappan who was not given any appointment. [No.12-972002/480 dt 14.11.2002]

Honourable Governor, respected guests on and off the dais, dear staff, students, and well-wishers,

Representing two of the institutions in this campus, am here to felicitate this great and noble venture of the diocese, namely the ‘Marian Edu-city’ which would come into existence in a short while, with its declaration by the honourable Governor, for the higher and technical academic pursuit of students.

In this historic moment, it would be befitting to know this campus. After some 26 years of the creation of the diocese, its first native bishop, Dr Peter Bernard Pereira of revered memory, bought this plot of some 60+ (46) acres in 1963.

 

Now 87 years old, the diocese has become an archdiocese, extending from Mampally near Anchuthengu to Erayumanthurai in Kanyakumari district along with few interior parishes in the city and its suburbs, having a population of 2,17,821 in some 58,501 families (as per 2013 survey) with rather poor educational status with:

-         Only 20.74% of us could complete High School, 9.85% Higher Secondary, 6.26% Graduation, 2.31% Professional degree and 2.06% Diploma/Certificate in Technical Education and Illiteracy: 9.39%. [Socio-Economic & Pastoral Survey of 2013]     

With the available high schools, higher secondary schools and colleges the need for a technical institution was felt way back in 1999. This was deliberated in the Board of Education, which I was fortunate enough to head, on 7^th September that year and the historic decision for the Marian Engineering College was taken. With our fiscal constraints, we opted for just three courses, namely Electronics and Communication, Computer Science and Information Technology to start with. Since the BoE did not have necessary fund, it was entrusted with the Trivandrum Social Service Society which owned this land. And this great dream became a reality in 2001 at our St. Vincent’s Minor Seminary [which was shifted here in 1981(April, 18^th) from Palayam later giving place for Jubilee Memorial Hospital] here. Soon it was shifted to the present location equipped with necessary infrastructure, leaving the space for St. Jacob’s Training College (SJTC) in 2005.  

The second seminary in the campus was converted into Little Flower Teacher Training Institute which was dropped after a few years. 13 years since MEC, Marian College of Architecture and Planning was started in 2014. Winding up the TTI, Little Flower Football Academy (2015) and Marian Craft and Arts Centre (2019) were started there. Thereafter Marian College of Arts and Science (MCAS) was started in 2016 in the third seminary. And today the Marian Business School also is getting launched by the honourable Governor.

Considering the institutions here at present and the possibility of having more in the near future and in the context of the National Education Policy introducing Four Year Undergraduate Program (FYUP), Integrated Courses, Multi-disciplinary Autonomous Institutions, Private Universities etc. we wanted to ensure the possibility of higher, professional and technical education to our students for their better future and that of the nation. That was how Marian Edu-city is unfolding here today in this campus paving way for autonomous or even Private University status, if time demands, in due course.

It would be good to remember the words of Paul in Romans, “For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body.., and individually members one of another. (12:4-5)

May this noble venture take off to soar high in the skies of academic pursuit providing opportunities for our students from the community and others as well. Thank you.

 

Representing two of the institutions in this campus which from this day would proudly be called the ‘Marian Edu-city’ with the declaration of the same by the honourable Governor in a short while, am here to felicitate this great and noble venture of the diocese for the higher and technical academic pursuit of the society. 

[This project though was a seminal proposal of the archbishop, turned out to be a marketing technique for the MEC and MCAP at the cost of SJTC and MCAS! The last two were side-lined, if not ignored altogether]

ഇന്ന് ഉയിർപ്പ് മൂന്നാം ഞായറാണ്. 

ഉയിർപ്പിന്റെ  പ്രത്യാശയും സന്തോഷവുമാണ് അലതല്ലേണ്ടതെങ്കിലും ഇന്നത്തെ മൂന്ന് വായനകളും പാപത്തെ, പാപമോചനത്തെ യാണ് മുഖ്യവിഷയമായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു കാണുന്നത്!

വേദപുസ്തക രചനതന്നെ പാപബോധം ജനിപ്പിക്കാനും വളർത്താനുമാണെന്ന് തോന്നുംവിധമാണ് അതിന്റെ ആദ്യ പുസ്തകമായ ഉത്പത്തി രണ്ടാം അധ്യായത്തിലെ സൃഷ്ടിയുടെ രണ്ടാം വിവരണം അവതരിപ്പിക്ക പ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. തുടർന്ന് ശിക്ഷയും പാപബോധവും അതിനുവേണ്ട പാപപ്പരി ഹാരങ്ങളും, മധ്യസ്ഥത യുമൊക്കെ അനിവാര്യമാ ക്കിതീർക്കാപ്പടെന്നുതും.

അനുസരണക്കേടിൽ, ധിക്കാരത്തിൽ, പാപത്തിൽ ക്ഷുപിതനായ ദൈവത്തെ പ്രീതിപ്പെടുത്താൻ ബലി തുടങ്ങി, മറ്റ് ആചാരനു ഷ്ടാനങ്ങൾക്ക് മതവും,  ഇടനിലക്കാരായി, മാധ്യസ്ഥരായി പുരോഹിതരുമടങ്ങുന്ന സംവിധാനങ്ങൾക്ക് ഇതിലും വലിയ ചേരുവകകൾ വേറെന്തു വേണം!

പുതിയനിയമത്തിൽ, മത്തായി അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സുവിശേഷത്തിൽ പിറവി വിവരണത്തിൽ 'യേശു' എന്ന പേരിന്റെ അർത്ഥം തന്നെ 'അവൻ തന്റെ ജനത്തെ അവരുടെ പാപങ്ങളിൽനിന്ന് മോചിപ്പിക്കും' (1:21) എന്നാണ്!

മുകളിൽ സൂചിപ്പിച്ച ഇന്നത്തെ ആദ്യ വായനയിൽ പത്രോസ് യേശുവിന്റെ ഉയിർപ്പിനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള തന്റെ പ്രസംഗം അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്, 'അതിനാൽ, നിങ്ങളുടെ പാപങ്ങൾ മായിച്ചുകളയാൻ പശ്ചാത്തപിച്ച് ദൈവത്തിലേക്കു തിരിയുവിൻ' (Acts 3:19) എന്നും രണ്ടാം വായനയിൽ പത്രോസ് തന്റെ എഴുത്തിന്റെ ഉദ്ദേശംവ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നത്: 'നിങ്ങൾ പാപം ചെയ്യാതിരിക്കേ ണ്ടതിനാണ്' (1Jn 2:1) എന്നുമാണ്.

തുടർന്ന്, അദ്ദേഹം മധ്യസ്ഥതയുടെ കാര്യം അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു: 'എന്നാൽ, ആരെങ്കിലും പാപം ചെയ്യാനിടയാ യാൽത്തന്നെ പിതാവിന്റെ സന്നിധിയിൽ നമുക്ക് ഒരു മാധ്യസ്ഥനുണ്ട് - നീതിമാനായ യേശുക്രിസ്തു. അവൻ നമ്മുടെ പാപങ്ങൾക്ക് പരിഹാര ബലിയാണ്... (2:2). 

മൂന്നാമത്തെ വായനയിൽ ഉദ്ധിതനായ യേശു പറയുന്നതായി ലൂക്കാ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു: 'പാപമോചനത്തിനുള്ള അനുതാപം അവന്റെ നാമത്തിൽ ജറുസലെമിൽ ആരംഭിച്ച് എല്ലാ ജനതകളോടും പ്രഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു' (24:47). 

ഈ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ പാപം എന്താണെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കാം.

ആർക്കും ദോഷമില്ലാത്ത ഒരു അനുസരണക്കേടാ ണോ പാപം! 

അത് ദൈവരാജ്യം യാഥാർഥ്യമാവുന്നതിനെ, നിത്യജീവിൻ പ്രാപിക്കുന്നതിനെ 

സാരമായി അപകട പ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ഒന്നായി മാത്രമേ കാണാൻകഴിയു. 

ഇതുമായി ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കാ വുന്ന ഒരു സംഭവം ലൂക്കാ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് നല്ല സമരിയാക്കാരന്റെ ഉപമയിലൂടെയാണ്. അതിനെ സംഗ്രഹിക്കു ന്നത്, 'നീയും പോയി അതുപോലെ ചെയ്യുക' (10:37) എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടാണ്. 

അതായത്, സ്വാർത്ഥതയാണ് പാപം, ആവശ്യക്കാരനെ, അർഹതപ്പെട്ടവനെ, ആശ്രയമില്ലാത്തവനെ, അവശനെ അവഗണിക്കുന്നതും, അത് എന്തിന്റെ പേരിലായാലും പാപമാണ്. 

ഇവിടെയാണ്‌ Mathew Fox- ന്റെ 'Original Blessing' എന്ന പുസ്തകം പ്രസക്തമാവുന്നത്. 

പ്രസവ വേദനയും അധ്വാനത്തിന്റെ ക്ഷീണവും ആലസ്യവും ശിക്ഷയാവുന്നതെങ്ങനെ! ഇത് മറ്റ് ജീവജാലങ്ങൾ ക്കുമില്ലേ! 

അധ്വാനമില്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഇന്ന് കാണുന്ന പുരോഗതി എന്താകുമായിരുന്നു. ജനനം മരണങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ മനുഷ്യന്റെ എന്നല്ല, മറ്റ് ജീവജാലങ്ങളുടെ കാര്യം എന്താകുമായിരുന്നു! ആ അർത്ഥത്തിൽ അവയെല്ലാം അനുഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ തന്നെയല്ലേ? അല്ലാതെ, അവയെങ്ങനെ ശിക്ഷയാകും! 

വിശുദ്ധിയിലേക്ക്, പരിശുദ്ധിയിലേക്കാണ് നാം വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത് (Lev 11:44, Mt 5:48). ഇതിന്റെ നിഷേധമാണ്, നിരാകരിക്കലാണ്, വെല്ലുവിളിയാണ് പാപം. ചിന്തയിലും, വാക്കിലും, പ്രവർത്തിയിലും എന്നല്ല ജീവിതം തന്നെ പരിശുദ്ധമാവണം, പരിപൂർണമാവണം, നിത്യജീവൻ അനുഭവിക്കാൻ, അവകാശമാക്കാൻ...

പാപത്തിൽ ആസ്പതമായ ആധ്യാത്മികത, മാതാത്മകത ചൂഷണം വിധേയമെങ്കിൽ, നിഷേധാത്മകമെങ്കിൽ വിശുദ്ധി, പരിശുദ്ധി, പരിപൂർണത എന്നിവയെല്ലാം  ഭാവത്മകവും  സൃഷ്ടിപരവും പരിണാമപരവുമാണ്...
