Milestones...

Pankiras (Pancras) Pancretius

28.01.1955 - Erayumanthurai

Second child of Mr. Arulappan Bhagavathar (son of late Mr. Vasthian Pillai of Kodimunai and late Mrs. Anthiniapillai) and Mrs. Lenamma (daughter of late Mr. Georis Pillai of Poonthura and late Mrs. Virisithaal of Kollemcode, Pozhiyoor) as the eldest child had an infant death some seven years back. In the meantime, my parents adapted one of the daughters of my eldest maternal aunt from Pozhiyoor and she was given in marriage.

Have a brother and a sister with a daughter and son for the former and three daughters and a son for the later.

I was baptized on 1st February 1955.

My school in 1960 was Govt. UPS at Poothurai and the medium switched to Tamil from Malayalam as this part of the princely state of Travancore was annexed to the state of Madras in 1956 when the states of the recently independent India were reorganized on language basis.

My first Communion was on 13.12.1965 and Confirmation was on 20.03.1966 by our first bishop Vincent V. Derera.

In 1968 for my High School went to Pius XI HS at Thoothoor, some three kilo metres away, walking, of course.

I passed SSLC (XI standard) of the Govt. of Madras in 1971 scoring 311 out of 600 with Reg. No.5292. [Here my date of birth is recorded as 10.05.1955. This is in spite of my ‘jathakam’ immediately after my birth! Those days, the head masters took every parent to be illiterate and gave a convenient date, mostly in the months of April, May and June!]

Not being exposed to the world and was influenced by an aunt next to our house, opted for priesthood having no clear idea of what it is. Thus I joined St. Vincent’s Seminary, Mede’s Lane, Palayam after being chosen by Bishop Peter Bernard Pereira on 31.05.1971.

In 1972 joined St. Xavier’s College, Thumba in Kerala University for Pre Degree. I passed scoring 545 out of 1000 with Reg. No: 12229. At this time stayed at St. Andrews Parochial House.

Thereafter went to St. Joseph’s Pontifical Institute, Carmelgiri, Alwaye for Philosophy (B.Ph) in 1974 and Pontifical Institute of Theology and Philosophy, Mangalapuzha for Theology (B.D) in 1977.

15.07.1985:   - asked to be in charge of Vallavilai, St. Mary’s as Gerald Silva, the parish priest had to be absent due to a seeming court summons for witnessing in a murder case… In the meant time there was a fight between the Hindus/RSS in the neigbouring Kannanagam area and   people of Vallavila on some rumours, resulting in a brutal fight and police firing and someone from the other side found missing… I was implicated in that incident and had to go rather underground due to threat to my life and arrest…

 Journalism Workshop - MCAS 27.10.23

Journalism is the practice of gathering, recording, verifying, and reporting on information of public importance. Though these general duties have been historically consistent, the particulars of the journalistic process have evolved as the ways information is collected, disseminated, and consumed have changed.

-Journalists research, write, edit, proofread and file news stories, features and articles. Their pieces are used on television and radio or within magazines, journals and newspapers, in print and online.

Homily... WhatsApp - 21.10.2023

 29th Sunday 22.10.'23

Is 45:1,4-6/ 1The 1:1-5/ Mt 22:15-21

-"I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God... " Is 45:5

- “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Mt 22:22 ("So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." Gen 1:27)

Today's first and third readings are connected on the theme of one God whereas the second reading stand apart unconnected!

Isaiah presents God chosing Cyrus 'For the sake of his servant Jacob, and Israel his chosen', and making him known that he is 'the Lord, and there is no other, besides him there is no God'.

In the gospel, Mathew presents Jesus facing

the disciples of the Pharisees along with the Hero′dians who ask him, “Teacher... is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus outwitted their trick to trap him either way saying to show him the money for the tax.” Seeing the coin he asked them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

Jews were not quite comfortable with the Roman rule, especially of their taxation as they were asked to pay in their currency bearing the image of Caesar and the inscription 'Tiberius Caesar, august son of the divine Augustus, high priest'. For the staunch monotheist as they are, the Jews could not accept it.

Using this rather precarious situation, they wanted to trap him either way. Knowing their trick so well, Jesus outwitted them asking them to show their currency. On seenig the image of Caesar on it he asked them to "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

The first part seemingly is solved. Now, what about the second part: 'Render... to God the things that are God’s.” What belonged to Caesar was decided by the image the coin bore, namely Caesar's image. In the same God's image has to be sought so as to present whatever bears his image to be presented to him.

Here, Genesis 1:27 would help us: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." That means one may present anything to anyone, whether Caesar or not, but to God what bears his image, that is every man and woman and nothing short of it.

That's one may present his having to anyone he or she likes but his or her being only to God.

On Vizhinjam Port.... WhatsApp - 12.10.2023

The much debated, dissented and resisted Vizhinjam Harbour is becoming a reality now!

And the people who have suffered all its brunts and are left to suffer still are our fisher people along the coast in Vizhinjam and its  north and south.

There is a saying, 'bloom where you are planted' as a plant has no choice of the place to grow. Certain things are beyond our power, even the collective power. Even otherwise we are destined to survive all odds, daring the elements even.

Our history is one of disappointments mostly because of our unpreparedness. That was the case with the Travancore Titanium Products (TTP), Airport (now Terminal1) and the Vikram Sarabai Space Centre (VSSC) of ISRO. We have equipped our people for rightful and possible jobs in any of these ventures.

Those who were employed were mostly in the last grades with the only exception of a Director of TERLS (Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station).

Here comes the much desisted and resisted Vizhinjam Harbour. Should we not ensure compensatory, remedial jobs for our people and to equip them with skills for all possible jobs there. Heard that training is going on for such possibilities. What about our people! Should they not be equipped for such possibilities? Let's be prepared for any eventuality.

On Divorce etc... WhatsApp - 07.10.2023

And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” He answered, “Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one’? So they are no longer two but one. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.” They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” He said to them, “For your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

(Mt 19:4-8) Gen 1:27, 2:24, 5:2

- The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry.” But he said to them, “Not all men can receive this precept, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it.” (10-12)

- Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, “Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” He answered them, “And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die.’ But you say, ‘If any one tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me is given to God, he need not honor his father.’ So, for the sake of your tradition, you have made void the word of God. (15:1-6)

- Now when the Pharisees gathered together to him, with some of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they wash their hands, observing the tradition of the elders; and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they purify themselves; and there are many other traditions which they observe, the washing of cups and pots and vessels of bronze.) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with hands defiled?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,

‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’

You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men.”

And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God, in order to keep your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die’; but you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me is Corban’ (that is, given to God)— then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God through your tradition which you hand on. And many such things you do.” (Mk 7:1-13)
